Another jump

The Voyages of Captain Happy

I have decided to return to my original journal. (Link above)
My heart hasn't been into this journal and I'm hoping if I go back to my more familiar one, I will become rejuvenated.

To anyone who has patiently followed me around- thank you.

A big heaping post

Opening
-We're almost at the half-way point of my music countdown, which means I'm bored of it. I'll get my second wind later. (I know no one cares or reads this anyway) Just for the record, #32 is An Honest Mistake by The Bravery.

- The last few times I've opened an AOL journal there were no ads at the top. If I decide to go back there, I will let you know. *crickets*

TV
- Am I the only one that is going to be pissed if FOX doesn't offer some kind of resolution for the newly-canceled Reunion? Yes, it had its flaws, but it was not worse than any of the usual crapfest FOX serves up. And I liked it. It should be allowed to finish out the season just for the sake of the premise, which was ingenius (on paper).

- And from the normally un-retarded monkeys at CBS we get the news that Threshold is also getting the boot. I've heard complaints that the show was too "episodic". That is total crap in my book. That's actually what I liked about it. I missed an episode and still knew what was going on the next week. Does every sci-fi show have to have some grand, nerdy mythology in order to be successful? Give Threshold a chance, CBS! It's certainly better than the utterly boring Invasion.

- Also, ABC canceled Hot Properties which I have not seen. I do feel bad for Nicole Sullivan, though. Maybe she can get her Arthur-walking job back in Queens.

MUSIC
- Here's a weird tidbit: My hatred of Green Day's politics has not only made me dislike anything off of American Idiot, but I also now dislike their old songs that I used to love. How does that work? I'm weird, right?

- If I like every White Stripes song I've ever heard, how come I never think of them when I'm naming my favorite bands? Actually, I should amend that statement since their cover of Tegan & Sara's Walking With a Ghost blows.

Wrestling
- I sure hope the WWE noticed what happened last night. Their beloved monkey-boy champion John Cena almost got booed out of the building. That's right- I'm not the only one out there who loves Kurt Angle and wants to see a real wrestler hold the title. I am getting really tired of every Cena segment ending with him looking pissed and struggling to get up because he just got beat down. Unless of course, it ends by him getting beaten for twenty minutes until he hits the two moves he knows and wins out of nowhere. No Cena segment has ever ended differently- you know when you see him that one of those two things is going to happen and it's getting really old. Last night's crowd knew it. I was even rooting for the frickin' Masterpiece to win at one point. It would be different.

The Best of 2005- # 34

#34 is Ghettochip Malfunction (Hell Yes!) by Beck. How can you not like Beck? Most of his songs are pretty catchy and this one is no exception with the exclamation of Hell Yes! in between every line, I was hooked immediately.

Beck's website is conveniently located at beck.com. You can watch a video with a version of the song, though it's not the funky "ghettochip" version I prefer.

Here's the beef

I got out of work early was staaaarving so I went to Wendy's drive-through. I made it just under the gun. It closes at midnight and I ordered at 11:58. I had to wait a long time, probably because they had to turn everything back on HA HA HA. Anyway, I thought they would be pissed at me, but apparently they loved me. I thought my burger tasted weird when I started eating, but it was only because of too much meat! Instead of a double cheeseburger, they accidentally gave me a quadruple. A quadruple! Assuming I don't die from fast food eating at midnight, this will go down as one of the great fast food screw-ups.

LOST- Episode 32: Collision

Previously on LOST: Jack met Ana-Lucia at the airport, Sawyer collapsed and Shannon died.
We open in flashback- Ana-Lucia is unloading a gun in target practice and then heads off to therapy. They discuss how her boyfriend left her, but she is better off alone and also whether or not she is ready to return to work. The therapist hands her her badge and says, "Welcome back to the force, Officer Cortez."
In the present, Sayid is understandably upset and goes into attack mode. Eko remains undefeated in island throwdowns and knocks Sayid out. Ana-Lucia still decides to hold everyone at gunpoint, though. This cues up the creepy LOST title screen.
Michael tries to talk some sense into A-L but she continues to surge forward over the edge. She fires a warning shot and orders the stretcher to be dismantled so Sayid can be bound with the ropes. Mr. Eko is the only one brave enough to defy her orders.
Ana-Lucia then flashes back to her return to active duty where she argues with her captain/mother about being stuck on a desk job. Mom tries to stay by the book- a desk job is required of someone returning from an officer-involved shooting, but it doesn't take much arguing before she gives into her daughter and puts her in a patrol car. [Side note: Maggie Grace has already been reduced to "special guest star" for her role as "corpse."
At the beach, Rose gives Jack some motherly advice before they are interrupted by an errant golf ball. Jack investigates and finds Kate, Hurley and Charlie on the shore wagering on how far Kate can hit a ball. Jack tries to give her some pointers which quickly escalates into some friendly competition.
In the jungle, Libby tries to talk Ana-Lucia into continuing on, but A-L won't go for fear of retribution. Eko hoists Sawyer over his shoulders and says he is taking him back to camp, not for Sawyer but for himself.
In a flashback, Ana-Lucia is upset that her patrol is in a peaceful neighborhood, so she grabs the first domestic disturbance call she hears over the radio. At the scene, A-L reveals that perhaps she wasn't quite ready to come back, as she is a little quick to pull out her gun on an unarmed perp. Her partner is a little freaked out, to say the least.
In the present, Ana-Lucia is rocking nervously as Libby tries again to talk to her. Michael brings some water to Sayid and brings him up to speed on everything that happened to the rafters.
On the golf course, Kate hits an impressive shot, while Jack's ball careens into the jungle. The banter quickly stops when Kate notices a large black stranger carrying her long lost boyfriend. Jack takes a cautious step back as Eko demands the doctor.
In the hatch, Locke is completing 42 down on a crossword puzzle when Jack and company arrive. They throw Sawyer into the shower to bring his fever down. Locke asks what's going on and, in a bit of irony, Jack has to remind him to push the button, as the alarm is sounding. Eko, meanwhile is observing the Dharma logo on the wall, when Locke sees him and they exchange a friendly and simple hello.
In the jungle, Bernard takes a stab at talking to Ana-Lucia, saying he just wants to get back to his wife. A-L reminds him that she has kept him alive this whole time and asks for some slack. Libby demands to know the plan, so Ana springs up and makes a ransom demand of Michael- ammo and clothes mostly. Michael takes off to get those things after some reassurance from Jin. Libby tells A-L she can't live alone in the jungle, but A-L says she is already alone.
Ana-Lucia flashes back to the end of her first day back where she is still arguing with her partner over the gun-pulling incident. On their way into the station, they are greeted with the news that the man who shot Ana has been caught and confessed. Even still, Ana-Lucia insists that it is not the right man. This displeases Mom.
In the present, Ana-Lucia stands over Shannon's body and looks sad as everyone watches her, wondering when they are going to get out of this mess.
In the hatch, Eko tells Locke about the accident and Locke pieces together that Shannon is the one who died. Meanwhile, Jack is having problems getting Sawyer to swallow a pill, so Kate takes over and uses a more feminine approach. Jack is slightly amused and says that he didn't learn whispering in the ear at med school.
Ana-Lucia returns from the crime scene to find Bernard packing up and going. Libby says Ana is not a good judge of character and she is going too. Jin is reluctant to go, but Sayid nods his okay. And so Ana-Lucia and Sayid are left to tensely stare at each other.
Meanwhile, Michael is running through the jungle and finds his way into Sun's secret garden. He tells her Jin is okay, but right now he needs to find Jack.
Jack is in the hatch, of course, and he is pretty mad that Shannon is dead. He demands answers from Eko, who has grown silent. He says anything he says will just make Jack angrier so he is going to just sit there. Michael and Sun arrive but the happy reunion is brief because a cut scene later, Jack is locking and loading the heavy artillery. He and Mike are about to leave, but Eko stops them, asking what they hope to accomplish with guns. He says that Ana-Lucia made a mistake, a name drop that stirs some recognition in the doctor. For the second time in a week, some brief but meaningful encounter in his life has found its way onto Crazy Island. Eko says he will take Jack to the scene alone and with no guns.
In the jungle, Ana-Lucia makes small talk with Sayid. Sayid tells how he tortured Sawyer and others and maybe she should kill him. A-L reciprocates with the story of how she was shot on duty when she let her guard down. Sayid asks what happened to her attacker and she flashes back to the fateful night when she followed the man she failed to identify to a bar. In the parking lot, she shouts to him and tells him she was pregnant before shooting him in cold blood, standing over his body and shooting him some more.
Sayid again asks what happened to him and she says, "Nothing." Then she gets up, cuts Sayid loose and drops her gun at his feet. She says she deserves to die, but Sayid says that it would do no good for them to kill each other since they're already dead. (Go nuts Purgatory theorists!) Sayid walks over to his dead girlfriend and hugs her to him.
In the hatch, Kate watches Sawyer fight to live. She strokes his hair and tells him he will be okay because he is home now. Musical montage time: Michael is reunited with Vincent (Hooray?), Bernard is reunited with Rose (Hooray!) and Jin is reunited with Sun (Hip Hip Hooray!) Meanwhile, in the jungle, Jack and Eko find who they were looking for. Jack and Ana-Lucia see each other and Foxy pulls out his now patented "I'm not crying, I swear" face. They stare at each other from a distance- about the length of a TV screen. Cool shot. And it's the last one.
Next time on LOST: We finally get some answers out of the Book of Kate.

The Best of 2005 #'s 36 & 35

# 36 is Apply Some Pressure by Maximo Park. This song really overcame the odds to make the list because I don't get to hear it any time I want like I do with most. Maximo Park is one of the artists no available on Realplayer Rhapsody so the only place I've heard this song is when they choose to play it on Sirius. The website is Maximopark.com. I could not get the video clips to play, though.

----------------------------------

#35 is Hey Now Now by The Cloud Room. You can listen to a clip of the song at the band's website, conveniently located at thecloudroom.com.

Sorry for the lack of depth today; I'll do better when I have more time during the week.

The Decemberists :: The Official Site

These bio pages just get weirder and weirder, as it seems The Decemberists have come to us through time travel. As such, they have no knowledge of multimedia technology and have no music clips or videos on the site.

We Both Go Down Together is off the album Picaresque.

The Best of 2005- #39

My 39th favorite song of the year is Catch My Disease by Ben Lee. This song will remind me for a while of my old boss. No, he didn't have a disease. (In fact, this song isn't even about a disease except maybe the disease of happiness- it's actually upbeat.) Anyway, the radio stations in Utica suck so I used to burn a whole bunch of songs that I heard on Sirius or elsewhere and bring them in to play on our CD player. Well, my boss loved this song. He borrowed the CD and copied it. And that's when I felt like I was doing some good in the world- exposing indie artists to those who would not have otherwise heard them. I also think I heard this song on a movie trailer- that 'Reese Witherspoon is a ghost' one.

You can watch the video here: Ben Lee :Awake Is the New Sleep :'Catch My Disease' Or you can watch it commercial-free at Ben-lee.com

Ben Lee // Awake is the New Sleep Ben also keeps a blog there, which is cool. People with blogs are cool. Remember that.

Name: Ben Lee

Album: Awake is the New Sleep

Hometown: Sydney, Australia

My book is now available!

My book is finally for sale! If you go to Trafford.com's bookstore and search for Kevin Burke, you can order it from there. I also have my own webpage there with sample pages and a picture and other stuff.

Novels written by me make a great gift. Order now to receive in time for the holidays. :)

The Best of 2005- #'s 41 & 40

I wasn't on the computer yesterday so I have to jam two of this year's songs into one entry. First up, at #41 is Fortress by Pinback.

Their website is Pinback.com, which I found to be slow-loading and not very useful. It's the first band site I've visited that did not have any portion of the song that made my list. And the ones that are available, you have to download. AOL has it, but it will probably only open if you are using AOL. Music Archive Videos: Pinback :Summer in Abaddon :'Fortress'

Band: Pinback

Album: Summer in Abaddon

Members: Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow

Why Fortress is #41: The song is very smooth and catchy. I can hardly understand any of the words, but that doesn't matter because I can understand the chorus and sometimes that's enough.

Stop. It's too late. I'm feelin' frustrated. I see no sign of fortress. I see no sign of fortress.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

And now on to the TOP 40! Whoo hoo! #40 is Fistful of Love by Antony and the Johnsons.

You can listen to a clip of the song at Antony's website, conveniently located at antonyandthejohnsons.com Antony and the Johnsons

One look at the bio page of Antony and the Johnsons and you might wonder how the hell this song ever made it onto my list.
AOL Music: Antony and the Johnsons : BIO I first heard this band/guy(?) on Sirius 26: Left of Center- a bizarre song called For Today I Am A Boy, which was surprisingly gender-bending. (The bio page actually shed some light on that!) I thought, "That's a weird song", and quickly dismissed it. Then the second song LOC played off the album, I Am A Bird Now, was Fistful of Love. I know it sounds like a love song written in prison, but it really is quite beautiful. Antony has a very strange voice, but it sounds great. The rousing brass is what really hooked me, though. It comes out as just an old-fashioned trumpet blaring love song and I like it a lot.

The Best of 2005- #42

#42 is Empty Room by Marjorie Fair. You can stream the video at the band's website, conveniently located at Marjoriefair.com.

Marjorie Fair

Band: Marjorie Fair

Album: Self-Help Serenade

Members: Evan Slamka, Dain Luscombe, Scott Lord, Mike Delisa

Why Empty Room is #42: Sometimes I just like a good melancholy song, and even though this song sounds sad, if you listen to the lyrics, it's kind of an uplifting message about embracing both life and death. I think...I get things wrong a lot. :)

The Best of 2005- #43

#43 on the countdown is Twin Cinema by The New Pornographers. You can listen to a clip of the song at the band's website located here: the new pornographers official website

Band: The New Pornographers

Album: Twin Cinema

Members: Dan Bejar, Neko Case, John Collins, Kurt Dahle, Todd Fancey, Carl Newman & Blaine Thurier

Hometown: Vancouver

Why Twin Cinema is #43: Because I said so! I'm still sick, ok?

LOST- Episode 31: The Other 48 Days

Welcome to the first edition of the LOST recap on Blogger...or if you're reading this on Crystal's message board, nothing has changed!

There is no "previously on LOST" this week, because we are starting at the beginning. We open on a serene beach on a beautiful afternoon. Suddenly, a whistling sound cuts through the air. It gets louder and louder until a large chunk of an airplane drops into the ocean. A smaller piece of wreckage rolls onto the beach and takes out the camera. So begins:

Day 1
Ana-Lucia surfaces and tries to make sense of what has just happened. There is a lot of screaming and confusion as every other survivor is trying to do the same thing. She swims to shore and sees Mr. Eko valiantly saving as many people as he can. She heads back into the water to help the cause. Eko rescues a young boy and his sister, but the girl is not breathing. Ana-Lucia rushes over to perform CPR and is successful. Ana promises the girl that she will get her home to her mother in Los Angeles. The camera pans out to a long shot of the chaos on the beach. Cue the creepy LOST title screen.
Mr. Eko drops the kids off with Cindy, who I believe is the stewardess that gave Jack the extra drink in the pilot episode. He says there is something he has to do- which turns out to be the unenviable task of pulling the dead bodies out of the water. Meanwhile, a man is bitching about his broken leg until Libby comes along and sets it for him. She is then introduced to Ana-Lucia. Next, a man comes running out of the jungle screaming for help. Ana-Lucia, the tail section's answer to Dr. Jack, springs into action. They race into the jungle and find Bernard, still in his seat, precariously dangling in a tree. Ana stays calm and talks Bernard through unbuckling his seat and grabbing a nearby branch.
As the sun sets on the beach, Ana-Lucia gets to know the man who found Bernard. His name is Goodwin and he is in the Peace Corps. Later, Bernard asks Mr. Eko if any of the bodies he fished out were African-American. Eko says no. Bernard fights back the tears and says he can't find his wife. Eko says that he will pray for her.
Late in the night, a commotion awakens most of the characters with names and they scramble to figure out what is going on. Goodwin and Eko come across a snarling Mr. Eko who is holding a bloody rock in his hand and standing over two dead bodies.
Day 2
The next morning, as Eko discards his blood-stained clothes, Ana-Lucia examines the raggedy, bare-footed people that unsuccessfully attacked him the previous night. They have no wallets or keys or anything normal people might carry. Someone points out that three survivors are missing. Ana-Lucia realizes that the people who attacked were here before them and they need to get off the beach. This idea is met with resistance. They need to keep a signal fire going- a notion all but confirmed by Flight Attendant Cindy who mentions how the pilot said they were way off course and had no communication.
Day 3
Libby says that the infection in Donald's broken leg is getting worse and if they aren't rescued soon, he will die.
Day 5
They bury Donald in what has clearly become the Tail Gang Graveyard.
Day 7
The survivors play chase the chicken. Goodwin wins and snaps the thing's neck. They all have a decent dinner for once, except for Mr. Eko, who is still alone on the shore serving some kind of pennance for his actions. Libby tells him he was only defending himself and should not feel bad.
Day 12
Ana-Lucia gets agitated with Nathan, who did not use the buddy system to go into the jungle to relieve himself.
That night, the raggedy, bare-footed people, who we'll call The Others, return as the survivors sleep. They grab the two children and several other people. All hell breaks loose and Ana-Lucia kills someone with a rock. She pulls an Army knife out of her victim's pocket, as well as a piece of paper. It is a list of the nine people The Others have taken that night.
Later, Eko emerges from the jungle in a silent huff- The Others left no trail whatsoever. Ana focuses her anger on him, asking what it will take for him to start talking. She then turns a suspicious eye to Nathan. Cooler heads eventually prevail and it is agreed that they should leave the beach.
Day 15
The troops are getting restless after walking in the jungle for three days straight and Ana-Lucia cannot convince them to keep going. They set up shop near a stream.
Day 17
Ana-Lucia is busy digging a ditch when Libby shares her concern over Nathan and the possibility of a mole being amongst them.
Day 19
Bernard and Nathan are setting up rabbit traps when Ana-Lucia stops by to kick Nathan in the face. She then dumps him into her completed underground cell. The others question what she is doing and she explains that she never saw him on the plane. Cindy the stewardess backs this up and Libby contributes that Nathan always dodges personal questions. That night, Ana opens the pit door and demands some answers. Nathan is from Canada and was in Australia on a business retreat. No one saw him on the plane because he was in the bathroom.
Day 23
A tired Ana-Lucia demands to know for the millionth time where the kids are, but Nathan is no longer speaking to her. She notices a banana peel and demands to know who has been feeding him. Though no words are spoken, she learns that it was Mr. Eko. Later by the stream, Goodwin tells Ana to let Nathan go because they are not savages. She answers that a savage would have cut off his finger...that's tomorrow.
That night, Goodwin rescues Nathan from the pit and tells him to run. But just as Nathan starts to take off, Goodwin grabs him and snaps his neck.
Day 24
Ana-Lucia wakes to find Goodwin creepily watching her sleep. Cindy runs up and says that Nathan is gone. Ana takes this as the signal that they have been found and need to leave.
Day 26
The weary travelers come across a rocky coastline. Ana-Lucia and Goodwin exchange glances.
Day 27
The survivors come across a door to a bunker. Cindy speculates that it could belong to The Others. Eko silently employs the 'only one way to find out' method and pushes the door open. The door says Quarantine on the inside. On the wall is a Dharma logo. Ana-Lucia finds a switch and turns on the electricity. Inside a trunk, they find a bible, a glass eye and a radio.
Outside, Bernard tries the radio but can't get a signal. Goodwin suggests going to higher ground and offers to go...alone. This puts a blip on Ana-Lucia's suspicion radar and she insists on going with him. On the hike, Ana questions The Others' motives. Goodwin serves up perhaps just a little too much information when he speculates that the first night, the strongest were taken out but the plan changed when two of them were killed. They take a break and there is a tense moment over who gets to hold the fruit-cutting knife. Ana wonders where the shoeless freaks got a twenty-year-old Army knife. She then decides to stop playing games and lay it all out. Goodwin heard Bernard's call for help on Day 1 becuase he wasn't on the beach. He was not even wet. He was not in the crash. He is the mole. Cover blown, Goodwin comes clean. Ana would know she had the wrong man once she cut off Nathan's finger. He killed him because he was not a good person. He wasn't on "the list". He goes on to say that the children are fine and are actually better off. Ana-Lucia attacks without warning and there is a brief rumble in the jungle. Ana wins when she impales a pouncing Goodwin with her spear. Later, she returns to her friends and tells them they are safe now.
Day 41
Bernard tries the radio again and this time he gets something. Someone who sounds a lot like Boone is broadcasting a mayday. As Bernard and Boone discuss who the survivors of Flight 815 are, Ana cuts off the transmission and says it is just The Others trying to lure them out of hiding. She says there are no other survivors. "This is our life now. Get used to it."
Later by the stream, Ana-Lucia breaks down and cries. Eko finds her and tells her everything will be okay. When she asks why he's talking now, he says it has been forty days. She asks why he waited forty days to talk, but he only points out that she waited forty days to cry. Then she falls into his arms and he holds her tenderly as she lets it all out.
Day 45
Cindy and Libby are working a fishing net at the beach when they notice a body wash up on shore. It is Jin. Libby says to get Ana-Lucia, which they obviously do, since in the next scene Jin is blindfolded and tied to a tree. Most think he is okay, but Ana remains suspicious, saying that his lack of English doesn't mean anything. Her suspicions seem confirmed when Jin breaks free and takes off. Jin makes it to the beach and warns Michael and Sawyer about The Others but they don't stand a chance against an armed and dangerous Mr. Eko.
Now a steady drumbeat and eerie music accompanies a montage of scenes from earlier episodes. Our season 1 friends being dumped in, then taken out of the pit. Their arrival at Hatch # 2. On Day 47, their long trek begins and Sawyer collapses. On Day 48, also labeled Today, Cindy goes missingand the Whispers start. Ana-Lucia fires her gun at the first thing that moves and nails Shannon right in the gut. We end things on the reaction shots of Sayid, Michael, Jin and Ana-Lucia, who makes quite a first impression.
Next week: Everyone comes together at last. Kate gets to see Sawyer on his deathbed and Ana-Lucia gets to tie up and attack Sayid as a preventive measure against his wrath.

The Best of 2005- #44

Though I am very ill and would like nothing more than to curl up in a ball somewhere, the countdown must go on! #44 is You Can't Steal My Love by Mando Diao. The video can be seen on their website with a little navigation and possession of Windows Media Player. The website is
here: MANDO DIAO

Band: Mando Diao

Album: Hurricane Bar

Members: Björn Dixgård, Gustaf Norén, Carl-Johan Fogelklou, Samuel Giers, Mats Björke

Hometown: Borlänge, Sweden

Why You Can't Steal My Love is # 44: Two words- Big Finish. I didn't think much of this song when I first heard it- thought it was too long and not terribly interesting, but then I paid closer attention and really got into how the song plugs a long and builds to a rousing climax.

Honey I love you! Like the summer falls and the winter crawls! You're above and beyond me!

One of those cases where one part that I liked converted me to liking an entire song.

Me...shopping?

So I went down to Besy Buy this afternoon to price Sirius and see if it was a viable Christmas gift option, and they were sold out! I think this glorious radio revolution is catching on. Oh, and there were plenty of XMs- HA HA HA! :)

In the parking lot, some guy in his car stopped to let me cross and instead of waving like a normal person, I instinctively did a little point with my fingers making the "gun". What the hell is wrong with me?

Then on the way home, a DJ said something that made me crack up. George Takei of Star Trek recently came out of the closet. Apparently, he still had no problem scoring with chicks on Star Trek. The DJ said, to paraphrase, "This is bad news for Trekkies- even being gay, Mr. Sulu got more action than the fans of the show."

The Best of 2005- # 45

I've already had a couple of people tell me that they like this one better than livejournals so I will probably stay here, but for the time being, I will be on both.

Anyway, back to the countdown- #45 is I Turn My Camera On by Spoon. I don't know if an AOL video will load off a webpage, but it's worth a shot: Music Archive Videos: Spoon :Gimme Fiction :'I Turn My Camera On'

Band: Spoon

Album: Gimme Fiction

Official website: S/P/O/O/N (it's not that great. I like it least of all the sites I've presented so far.

Why I Turn My Camera On is #45: When it first came out, I said to someone that this is a "struttin' song". I like the beat a lot.

The Voyages' next stop?

So I was reading the seemingly thousands of complaints on the AOL journals page and some people mentioned this site. So I was thinking of moving here. I like the look a little better than livejournals, plus there are buttons for bold and italics, which I like better than the complicated mumbo-jumbo Jewels tried to explain to me to make something bold. But since you're the ones who have to read it- I thought I might ask for your input. Which one do you like better?
